Three children, two boys and a girl, stumble upon a flying saucer. The boys both step in without hesitating, and are whisked away to a planet in Earth's orbit but on the exact opposite side of the Sun. Inhabiting this planet are two women with Midwestern accents, who hypnotize the children to find they fantasize about milk, donuts, and Gamera, our favorite hero turtle. The women simply want to eat their brains. Back home, no one will believe the little girl's story of alien abduction, not even Officer Concha (pronounced "Cornjob"). Finally, Gamera rescues the children while fighting Guiron, a monster with a giant knife for a nose. Gamera kills Guiron while doing gymnastics on a parallel bar and takes the kids home, where the kids hope for peace, understanding, and the end of traffic accidents.

GAMERA TAI DAIKAIJU GIRON was released in the United States as ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS. It's distributor AIP felt that the Gamera films were not effective for a theatrical screening like the Godzilla films. AIP felt that Gamera was better for television viewing. AIP already released the earlier Gamera sequels to TV. So ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS was released directly to television by AIP-TV. The English dubbing was done by Titan Productions, Inc. and the dubbing was perfect. Well, ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS fell into obscurity and was never seen again.

In 1985, television producer Sandy Frank wanted to bring the Gamera films back to life. However, he felt that the original dubbing was not "up to his standards" so he placed a new English language version on the Gamera films. ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS was now titled GAMERA VS. GURION and had a new dubbing track. Frank released his new versions of the Gamera films, but they were not well recieved. Even though Frank's versions are uncut and restore scenes that AIP-TV edited out, Frank's dubbing was horrible and out of synch while the AIP-TV dubbed versions were more convincing and were perfectly in synch. Frank's versions are now no longer available.

But Neptune Media finaly releases the original Japanese version of GAMERA TAI DAIKAIJU GIRON as GAMERA VS. GUILLON in subtitled form. And though I am pleased that the original version is now on home video, the AIP-TV version is still not available. Neptune Media has released a special widescreen edition of GAMERA VS. GUILLON with the original AIP-TV dub placed on it, I would suggest not viewing that version because it is better to view the original TV version in it's original panned and scanned format.

GAMERA VS. GUILLON begins when astronimical observatories catch strange waves from outer space. Scientists believe that the waves are sent by aliens from another planet. One night three kids Akio (Nobuhiro Kajima), Tom (Christopher Murphy), and Akio's sister Tomoko (Miyuki Akiyama) see a flying saucer land in the woods. They go there to see it and the saucer takes Akio and Tom away while Tomoko tries to convince everybody that the boys were taken away from a spaceship. The boys have a run in with Gamera, but the ship lands on a small planet called Tera. The planet is inhabited by monsters such as a Silver Space Gyaos and a knife headed monster called Guillon (called Guiron in both AIP-TV and Sandy Frank versions). The planet is also inhabited by two space women who want to eat the kids brains! Yikes! It's up to Gamera to fight Guillon and save the two boys!

Though GAMERA VS. GUILLON is indeed a childish film, it is a change of pace from all the serious monster films. And GAMERA VS. GUILLON works better this way. The special effects are good and are way better than the fake CGI effects that are created today. GAMERA VS. GUILLON is indeed the most fun version in the Gamera series.
