I've been a big Rooster Teeth fan for years & was incredibly excited for this movie. I watched it in theaters the day it premiered in January, and because I was so hyped up about it, I laughed at nearly everything, loved the references, and had an incredible viewing experience. While even then I didn't consider it an amazing movie, I still thought it was really really good because I was so proud of the company. But I watched it again recently, and I realized it's not as great as I thought it was.
It has many funny jokes, but sometimes the humor comes off as juvenile & forced, which is somewhat disappointing considering Rooster Teeth have written very witty and clever comedies before. The characters in the movie are likable, but are also easily forgettable & are not people who the audience truly care for. Their development is not written well & they are filled with character stereotypes (dumb redneckdorky smart guy, popular egotistic jock who's secretly self-conscious, preppy blonde teen, etc). The only character in the film that isn't a walking cliché is Herman (Colton Dunn). Although this movie is a comedy, it does have a small amount of moments that I think were supposed to be serious (SPOILER such as Adam's death), but were executed poorly & were incredibly weak emotionally. The acting is decent & the special effects are actually pretty good(other than the aliens), especially for a low-budget movie.
Overall (whether you are an RT fan or not), it's an enjoyable movie, but not one that you will want to see again and again.
