In the near future, advances in genetics and technology have eliminated all physical and psychological suffering. This is accomplished by means of remotely filtering negative sensations through surrogate human beings artificially cloned and warehoused for this purpose in storage vats. Detective Mario Cabal investigates the case of a beautiful young woman whose "depositario," or surrogate, has been abducted by a jilted ex-boyfriend. When Mario discovers the kidnapper has awakened the surrogate in the hopes of reuniting with his beloved, the detective begins to question whether the surrogates are devoid of consciousness, as is largely believed.
