Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde was the source for this Expressionist horror film directed by F.W.Murnau, which uses as its dominant image a sinister bust with two faces, one noble and the other demonic. The wealthy and kindly Dr.Warren (Conrad Veidt) finds the statue in an antique shop and purchases it. He becomes obsessed with the bust as a metaphor for the duality of good and evil within the human psyche and develops a chemical formula which he uses to transform himself at will into the monstrous Mr.O'Connor. Eventually he can no longer control his transformations, and O'Connor kidnaps Warren's girlfriend Grace (Margarete Schlegel). Pursued by the police, the trapped O'Connor takes poison, killing both himself and Dr.Warren. The corpse is found clinging to the bust.
