This movie was only incidentally about Zoe or even the astronaut. The emotive energy is from the ungrateful, possessive parents. They see everything in terms of ownership. The mother accuses the father of having sold their daughter without consulting her. This all could have been better supported with just a bit of what they went through, but we know little of anyone, really. The premise that this dying woman would be made a "queen" and repopulate a dying species is beyond ludicrous -- that they have the tech to cross galaxies and cure cancer but not fix their reproduction is inane.... And this revealed right after the alien chides the father that this is not like our science fiction movies, he trots out this trope.
